Depression, emotional pain,fear, doubt and worry are signals designed to wake you up to the fact that there's a thought you have entertained that you may want to investigate and get rid of. They are signals that say "hey, take a look at what you are thinking right now. You're living in a story that is not true for you.” Investigate and challenge any thought that is untrue before it becomes a story that you tell yourself.
Stories are sequence of thoughts that we have convinced ourselves are real. A story may be about the past, the present or the future. It may be about things we should do or what can be. Stories are untested, non-investigated theories or assumptions that hold us hostage.
The problem is that we don't seem to realize that most of our stories are just assumptions; and those assumptions consolidate into beliefs. The beliefs we have, most of which are unconscious, determine what we see. We are interpreting everything around us through the lens of our beliefs.
